Action in Solidarity with Coalition of Immokalee Workers

On May 18th, 2013, Louisvillians stood in solidarity with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers who are engaged in a campaign to urge the fast food chain Wendy’s to agree to the terms of the Fair Food Agreement. Those involved in the action here in Louisville not only took their message to the streets, but also into the Wendy’s located on the corner of Grinstead and Bardstown Rds, where they served management with information intended to be passed to higher management and ultimately to the CEO.

Compassion Panel @ Louisville Youth Build

On May 13th, 2013 Youth Build Louisville hosted a panel on the topic of Compassion. The panelists, made up of community members responded to questions explaining what compassion means to them and how they experience it in their daily lives. Big thanks to Louisville Youth Build and all the panelists: Lloyd Davis, Aubrey Clemons, Anthony Smith, Khalilah Collins, and Mikal Forbush for allowing WFOR to share in this great event.

Americana Community Center-Voices from International Women’s Day

On March, 8th Americana Community Center celebrated International Women’s Day by giving awards to women in the community who are engaged in grassroots leadership and community development. As part of the day’s events they hosted a digital recording project in which women from the community gave responses to two question. “What does it mean to be a woman in today’s world?”, and “Who is a woman that has impacted your life?”.

ACLU of KY hosts James Esseks on LGBT Rights

The ACLU of Kentucky was proud to host Defense of Marriage Act Attorney James Esseks as keynote speaker for the 20th Annual Carl L. Wedekind Bill of Rights Dinner. Esseks spoke on the evening of April 25 at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts.

Esseks has been Counsel before the U.S. Supreme Court in the United States v. Windsor challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Esseks offers listeners a unique view on what it was like to argue the case on behalf of Edie Windsor, what the ACLU’s plans are for the Supreme Court decision in June 2013, and the ACLU’s next steps to win the freedom to marry for all Americans.

Esseks has been Director of the ACLU Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & AIDS Project since 2010, and was its Litigation Director starting in 2001. James oversees legal advocacy around the country that aims to ensure equal treatment of LGBT people by the government; equal protections for LGBT couples and families; protection from discrimination in jobs, schools, housing, and public accommodations; and fair treatment of people living with HIV. James graduated from Yale College and Harvard Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review.

Uyghur Sounds at Americana

The Americana Community Center’s Digital Music Project recently hosted two visiting Cultural Ambassadors from the Peoples’ Republic of China. Kahriman Keyum, one of the ambassadors and a musician from China’s Uyghur minority, participated in an informal workshop with the students in the Digital Music class. He performed and recorded his beautiful fusion of traditional Uyghur music and flamenco. The class then set to remixing and re-editing the recorded music, exhibiting their technique of reinterpreting global sounds through digital music technology. Below are the original recorded tracks, and the remixes are on the way!

Phyllis Bennis-The Palestinian/Israeli Conflict

Phyllis Bennis directs the New Internationalism Project at IPS. She is also a fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam. She has been a writer, analyst, and activist on Middle East and UN issues for many years. In 2001 she helped found and remains on the steering committee of the U.S. Campaign to End Israeli Occupation. She works closely with the United for Peace and Justice anti-war coalition, co-chairs the UN-based International Coordinating Network on Palestine, and since 2002 has played an active role in the growing global peace movement. She continues to serve as an adviser to several top UN officials on Middle East and UN democratization issues.

On April 16th, 2013, Bennis spoke at Bellarmine University focusing on Palestinian/Israeli Conflict, U.S. Militarism and Foreign Policy, and other issues.
